American Chestnut Bowl

If you know anything about trees, or wood, you know that it's very rare to find a healthy American Chestnut tree. Before the species was devastated by the chestnut blight, a fungal disease, it was one of the most important forest trees throughout its range, and was considered the finest chestnut tree in the world. Today , because of the blight, it is very scarce. (There is great work being done to create a hybrid Chestnut that is blight resistant so we can enjoy this gorgeous tree again in the future.)

I was fortunate enough to get one cut off the end of a log from a friend who has a mill; he was selling this rare log to a special customer. I was able to make only two salad bowls and this is one of them.

This log was not just rare, it's gorgeous. The photos speak for themselves. I suggest doing an image search of American Chestnut Lumber and see for yourself that this is as beautiful a specimen of this species of lumber as you will find. I was privileged to have been able to work with it.

This bowl measures 13.25"x 4". It is a great salad bowl for 3-4 people. It can also be a popcorn bowl, a fruit bowl or be proudly displayed in all of it's glory as is.
